Tomorrow, January 27, is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The theme this year is Children and the Holocaust. During the Holocaust, over 1.5 million children were killed by the Nazi regime, including over a million Jewish children, thousands of Romani, and even ethnic Germans, deemed undesirable because of mental or physical defects. When faced with pressure from the Nazi government, the Jewish council would sometimes even be forced to deport children to the death camps first, where they would be promptly gassed or shot.

Following Kristallnacht in late 1938, attempts were made by British officials to try to transport refugee Jewish children to Great Britain from Germany and German-occupied territories, and by efforts by these organizations and by brave individuals, thousands of children were saved… but over a million were not.
