Contrary to the claims of your average Match.com ad, finding love online doesn’t mean your relationship will be any better than one formed between two strangers who met at a bar.

Researchers analyzed over 400 studies of online dating sites and published their findings in the February issue of “Psychological Science in the Public Interest.” They dispute that online dating algorithms, touted by sites such as Chemistry.com and eHarmony.com, produce stronger long-term partnerships than simply approaching a cutie across a crowded room.
 “To date, there is no compelling evidence that any online dating matching algorithm actually works,” wrote study author Eli Finkel, an associate professor of social psychology at Northwestern University.
